NCCER's Heavy Equipment Operations curriculum is designed to provide the foundational skills of safety, pre- and post-operation checks, site planning and layout, and operational skills for a range of light-duty and heavy equipment. Heavy equipment simulator exercises are used to replicate real-life operating scenarios. This curriculum is designed to be used flexibly in conjunction with other craft training material.

Its modules cover topics such as:
  • Introduction to the Trade of Heavy Equipment Operation
  • Equipment Safety
  • Identification of Equipment Needed for the Job
  • Basic Operational Skills
  • Introduction to Utility Tractors
  • Earthmoving Equipment and Grades
  • Operation of Vertical-Mast Sit-Down Counterbalance (SDCB) Forklifts
Length: 84 Course Hours (37.5 in-person hours / 46.5 self-paced online hours)

Prerequisite:  NCCER Core certification

Potential Certifications:  Upon successful completion of all modules in the curriculum, students will receive the National Center for Construction Education & Research Heavy Equipment Operations Level 1 certification.

Occupational Objective: Trainees of NCCER's Heavy Equipment Operations curriculum learn to work not only on construction building jobs, but also on infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges and ports, and mining and timber operations.
