The CDL: Class A (E Restriction - Automatic Shift) Truck Driver Training curriculum teaches students how to inspect and operate tractor trailers and to assume driver responsibilities on the road and at pickup/delivery points. This program prepares students to sit for the Virginia CDL examination.
Emphasis is placed on the following:
- vehicle inspections
- defensive driving
- range maneuvers
- motor carrier safety regulations
- trip planning
- cargo handling
- size/weight laws
- general maintenance procedures
- hours of service
- accident prevention
Length: 160 Course Hours
Potential Certification: Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the CDL Class A License exam.

Curriculum Requirements (
must be obtained and provided to Ancora Training prior to enrollment):
- Valid Virginia Driver's License.
- Valid Medical Examiner's Certificate by passing a DOT physical.
- Class A Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).
- Consists of 3 tests: General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination (can be taken in 1-3 sessions).
- Manual available at DMV to prepare for CLP.
- Mobile prep apps include "CDL Prep" and "CDL Test".
- DOT drug screen with negative results.
- Driving record from DMV for the last 5 years (available online at https://www.dmv.virginia.gov).
Register with Ancora Education to complete your curriculum requirements.
- Payment vouchers provided for DOT physical and drug screen.
