This program equips students with the knowledge and skills required to collect blood specimens for laboratory analysis. Participants will gain comprehensive understanding of all aspects related to blood collection, including specimen handling and patient interactions. Through hands-on practice, students will develop the competency and safety techniques necessary for proficient venipuncture.
Program includes a 36-hour internship, providing guided phlebotomy experiences where students can apply learned principles and techniques. Students will perform a minimum of thirty venipuncture and ten capillary sticks on live individuals with the use of a comprehensive checklist that will ensure the observation and practice of essential skills.
Some tasks phlebotomy technicians may perform include:
- Drawing blood from patients and blood donors.
- Evaluating patients’ ability to withstand the procedure and helping them feel comfortable.
- Explaining blood-drawing procedure to patients and answering questions.
- Performing basic point of care testing, such as blood glucose levels.
- Preparing blood, urine, and other specimens for testing.
- Maintaining medical equipment supplies.
